You Are Not the Same Person You Were Five Years Ago

Many people continue eating the same way year after year because a particular diet once helped them lose weight, improve energy, or feel healthier. Or they eat ‘that way’ because they’ve always eaten that way or because that’s what their parents ate.  However, your body is constantly changing. Age, activity level, muscle mass, stress, sleep quality, hormones, medications, gut health, and even your microbiome can shift significantly over five years. Research shows that nutritional needs and metabolic responses change throughout adulthood, meaning the eating plan that worked at age 30 may not be the best fit at age 35, 40, or 50. Instead of asking, "What diet worked for me before?" a better question may be, "What does my body need now?"

Modern nutrition research increasingly supports a personalized approach to eating. Studies have demonstrated that people can have dramatically different responses to the same foods based on genetics, metabolic health, gut bacteria, physical activity, and other individual factors. A diet that once provided excellent results may become less effective as body composition, insulin sensitivity, hormone levels, or lifestyle demands change. Periodically reevaluating your nutrition habits allows you to identify what is supporting your current health goals and what may be holding you back. Just as we update our exercise routine, healthcare plan, or financial strategy, our nutrition deserves regular reassessment as well.

At Rubin Family Chiropractic, we encourage patients to think of nutrition as a lifelong conversation rather than a destination.  Our favorite way to evaluate your diet is to have you write down everything you eat for up to 7 days…but the key trick is to monitor how you feel after each meal.  For instance, if every time you eat steak at night, you wake up with a stomachache the next morning, that is your body’s way of saying, ‘don’t eat that’.  Or if you eat hot dogs for lunch and then feel super tired or majorly angry, then you body is talking to you, saying ‘don’t eat that’. The idea is to listen to your body’s physical or emotional signals, then change what you eat and see if that helps.  That is an easy, quick and simple way to reassess your diet

Every five years is a reasonable time to reflect on your energy levels, recovery, digestive health, body composition, sleep quality, and overall well-being. You are not the same person you were five years ago, and your body may require different nutrients, different meal timing, or different dietary patterns to thrive. Taking the time to reassess what you eat can be one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support a healthier spine, a healthier nervous system, and a healthier life.
