What Do Newton's Laws Have to Do with Chiropractic Care?
Most of us learned Isaac Newton's Laws of Motion in school, but they also offer an interesting way to think about chiropractic care. Newton's First Law states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion, while an object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. In a similar way, kids can become stuck in patterns. Whether it's poor posture, chronic stress, repetitive movement habits, or nervous system challenges, the body often continues doing what it has been doing. This can be especially noticeable in children who struggle with sensory processing, communication, or developmental issues. Chiropractic adjustments serve as a gentle, specific influence that can help restore proper movement and improve communication between the brain and body, giving the nervous system an opportunity to adapt and respond in new ways.
Newton's Second and Third Laws remind us that change requires the right amount of force and that every action produces a reaction. Effective chiropractic care is about using the appropriate force for that specific person. A child with a sensitive nervous system, a pregnant mother in discomfort, or a newborn baby with colic all need very different types of adjustments. Just as a skilled trainer gradually increases exercise intensity to build strength safely, chiropractors carefully tailor adjustments to a person's needs and nervous system capacity. Over time, as healthier patterns develop and the body becomes more adaptable, positive changes are often easier to maintain, reflecting Newton's idea that a body in motion tends to stay in motion.
