Starting up a chiropractic practice, Marie Hoying, student intern
In 2014, it is fairly uncommon to see a student right out of chiropractic school open up their own office. All throughout my training I was sure that I wanted to associate with another chiropractor as soon as I graduated, since I found the thought of opening up my own business very frightening. However, as school went on, I gained numerous helpful mentors and I began to become more and more confident with my abilities and myself. It wasnt long until I realized that I was meant to open up my own practice. I made this decision about a year out from graduation and since then, there has been no looking back. I have dove head first into the ins and outs of what it takes to open your own business, and it gets me more excited every day.
Ive always known growing up that in some way I wanted to be around and help kids. My original thoughts as a young kid was to be a teacher. Not long later, chiropractic fell into my hands. What better way to be around kids than to be a chiropractor who gets to help make sure children stay healthy? Theyre always happy, energetic, and are sure to cheer you up, which is exactly what I want my days to be filled with. I was so remarkably excited when I found out that I was going to intern for Dr. Rubin! Its been such an amazing opportunity to get the exposure that I have while being in his office. Ive benefited tremendously from being around and learning from one of the top chiropractic pediatric specialists in this country. I couldnt thank him enough for the experience Ive gained. It has definitely reassured my confidence in being able to open my own office right after graduation.
This past week I got the chance to go back home to Ohio and look at potential office spaces. It was a very surreal feeling knowing that Im finally at the end of the road. Ive waited and waited for this time for the last 3 ½ years and now that its finally here Ive become overwhelmed with excitement and nerves. There have been hours of research put in to finding a location and office space and it has definitely all paid off. My decision to go back to Ohio was an easy one. Ive always been a family person and 3 ½ years away from my family was a wonderful experience but long enough. I will begin my chiropractic career near Dublin, Ohio, close to family and friends!
My practice will be family based with a large variety of kids. Im eager to see children with a wide range of problems from autism spectrum disorders, asthma, allergies, ADHD, to parents who just want their children to stay healthy and vibrant. I also plan to see expecting mothers, where I will work to improve the neuro-biomechanical function of the mothers pelvis by reducing SI joint dysfunction or a sacral subluxation to keep her and the baby free of any nerve interference. My passion to help kids and families is tremendous and the journey where it will all begin is in the rapidly approaching near future!
Finally, I would just like to say how extremely blessed I am to have 5-6 of the greatest mentors that anyone could ever ask for, my parents being two of them. Without these individuals constantly pushing me and encouraging me through the tough times and now being there more than ever to help me get my own practice up and running, I could never be where Im at today. I couldnt thank these individuals enough for the endless phone calls, visits, talks and emails with questions and concerns that Ive had and continue to have. There is no doubt I was put on this earth to become a chiropractor and there will be nothing that stops me from achieving this life long dream.
